Web Design

We offer web design ranging from rudimentary single page up to e-commerce class sites that include load balancing and redundancy.

Our sites are commonly developed using the three-tier architectural model that contain clearly defined user interfaces, business logic and backend databases. We specialise in Microsoft technology as well as the "Open Source" world. This gives greater choice to our customers. Major differences between these areas are discussed in the Server Side section below.

When website content is accessed by a user, there are two main processes that occur; client side and server side. It's important to understand these processes because they will dictate what kind of host or internet service provider can run your website, and to a lesser extent, the support of web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Client Side

Through the client side of the website - or the part that is viewed and interacted with by the user - we support the following technologies. These are tested across the major web browsers; Internet Explorer, Fire Fox, Apple Safari and the soon to be Google Chrome.

  • HTML
  • XHTML (The latest standard of HTML that is based on XML)
  • CSS
  • JavaScript

All client side content is delivered and validated using the latest standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Formatting and content will be clearly separated using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and XHTML pages respectively. This ensures formatting changes such as font or text colour can be made in a single CSS file instead of modifying individual XHTML pages as websites usually contain a "theme" for their associated content.

Server Side

Server side must function before the client side can be accessed. Server side is the mechanism that passes the client side content to the user's web browser. This is where your choice and cost associated with an internet service provider or host can change significantly.

There are two main server side technological areas that relate to Microsoft where software license(s) need to be purchased and the "Open Source" world that is assoicated with free or open licensing. An open license does not negate all costs because a hosting company will still need to pay for internet access and maintain the servers that run your website.

Depending on the type of website you require, the server side choices may become focussed but generally there are a greater number of hosts to choose from in the "Open Source" world. These hosts will be more cost effective due to open licensing and provide similar levels of service.

It's an important decision to make because the associated technologies of these two worlds are not interchangable.

Please note: It is possible to host for example PHP (Open Source) using Microsoft technologies without fully re-designing the server side content. In this scenario the cost and hosting flexibility benefits would be negated.

Microsoft

  • Active Server Pages (ASP)
